Don’t Stop the Rock
This week seems to beg the question, “Why does everything happen at once?” After a light week, the shows are all packing themselves into the weekend. Couldn’t we space them out a little more? Couldn’t we put something on, say, Tuesday? Well, the answer is no.
So for this week, here are the shows I plan to stand outside of and rescalp tickets to. I mean, uh, see.
- Monday: Chin Up Chin Up @ the Empty Bottle. They’ve been through a lot this year with the loss of their bassist in February, but they haven’t let their music suffer for it. This is a free show, show we all have no reason to stay home tonight! 9:30pm, w/ the Race & Tight Phantomz.
- Thursday: Troubled Hubble @ Logan Square Auditorium. These guys sing it like it is with their own brand of fun, upbeat music that often recalls the, uh, “glory” days of childhood nerddom. It’s a band I can relate to. Their shows are never ordinary; in the past they’ve featured chalk drawings completed during the show and various cartoon characters and animals dancing along with them. w/ Carrier (ex-Flaming Lips), Clyde Federal & the Gunshy. All ages, 8pm.
- Saturday: The Ponys @ the Double Door. Okay, the Ponys are THE punk band in Chicago. ‘Nuff said. w/ the Dirtbombs, Miss Alex White and the Golden Boys. 10pm, $12.
- Sunday: Walter Meego @ Schuba’s. I never know how to explain this band. A combination of guitar, turntables and computer tracks produce a moody-but-dancy, mellow-but-jumpy sound with atmosphere and substance. They can pack as much content in two lines as most songs have in four full verses. w/ the Changes & the Joggers. 18+, 8pm, $8.
- I also notice that Rock Star Club, featuring one of our very own Chicago Metblog writers, is playing the Double Door. Now this presents me with a dilemma. I’ve never seen Rock Star Club, but I must support my own, right? Maybe if I time it right, I can see both shows… Hm… this one starts at 7:30pm… and it’s $15 the day of… w/ Flickerstick & Brill… Why am I ending everything with three periods…
So I have six days to choose and figure out what next Sunday’s schedule will be. Whatever happens, I’m sure – are you ready for it? – I’m sure it’ll rock.
I have to end on a cliche. I just HAVE to.
I noticed you’ve got a hole where Wednesday goes, so might I recommend the show at Double Door Wednesday with Rockit Girl, American Cosmonaut, The Cells, Textbook and The Wes Hollywood Show.
If you want to get your Chicago based rock and/or roll on, with a heavy dose of melody, that’s the place to be that night…
Also, Rock Star Club put on a fabulous live show…truly…hey…
We open the show at 7:30 and we plan to bring it, so be ready for some hot rock and roll action!
