The Ponys: “We Are the Pop Culture.”

A couple weeks back a friend graciously filled me in on what I missed at the Ponys/90 Day Men show at the Empty Bottle New Year’s Eve. One of the main features had a lasting impression – in honor of the Ponys, he chained a merry-go-round pony to the bike rack out front.

His story came back to me this afternoon as I walked down Western Avenue and noticed, it’s still there.

the Memorial

Written all over it are references to their 2005 anthem “Pop Culture,” available on the compilation CD Maybe Chicago. I imagine them playing this song just after midnight if only for the one line, “It’s 2005 in my city tonight.

Now, I’m not offering up any opinions about chaining things to bike racks or any other public place. (I will take pictures of such things though.) My sources say it’ll remain there until it gets warm and people start needing the bike rack, or until the city gets tired of it and cuts the chains. Until then, you can still see it in front of the Empty Bottle or just look at these pictures here, if you so desire.
