Sunday is clearly Official Be Nice Day

Today was obviously declared Official Be Nice Day.

I left the warm, cosy (but in dire need of cleaning) apartment in search of groceries. I’d been putting it off because I knew I was going to have to dig out my car, which I knew would be snowed in — and then snowplowed in, on top of that — to get out. So I dressed in snow-digging-appropriate clothes and headed out to my lot — where the snowplow crew spotted me getting my shovel out of the car, and promptly hopped out of the truck and dug my car out for me. We had a great conversation, and all I ended up having to do was brush the snow off the hood and windows.

Then the grocery store, which was, predictably, packed with Sunday-afternoon shoppers. Everybody in the aisles were all smiles and cheerful. When I finished, I got in the five-carts-deep line… and every time someone had to ask us to move around so they could walk or maneuver a cart through, every single person was all please, excuse me, thank you. My checker and bagger were also happy. Then the cart-retrieval guy in the parking lot helped me load up my car.

Do some other stuff, come back home to my lot… and the snowplow guys are still working. They offered to plow out my spot (which they hadn’t gotten to yet in my absence) if I pulled back out, so I did. And they plowed out my spot for me. It was awesome.

I am in such a freakishly good mood now as a result of all this niceness. I’m almost giddy enough to do the laundry!

as bad as this weather is, it does bring out the best in chicagoans, doesn’t it. during the last storm, the lady parked in front of me lent me her shovel and helped me get out. sometimes this world amazes me.

My neighbor used his snowblower to clear out his driveway, the sidewalk all around his corner lot, the alley entrance, AND three cars including mine. He even shoveled his next door neighbor lady’s back porch stairs.

Made him homemade oatmeal raisin cookies and double chocolate brownies. My neighbors rule!
