Two years ago there was a Reader article about how you don’t have to pay the “suggested donation” at Chicago street fairs because they’re on public property (and Chicagoist reminded us of it last year). Well, just down the street from this weekend’s Belmont-Sheffield Music Fest someone* had put up these two banners.

*(Someone officially associated with The Alley? There were Alley stickers on the banners, and the banners were zip-tied to the fence of the Alley’s parking lot outside the Punkin’ Donuts. Normally I’m not a fan of idle speculation — I’d just call the Alley and ask. But it’s late Sunday night and I drove to Indiana and back today and darn it, here’s your idle speculation.)
