Cook County Jail: Smoking only when on fire

The inmates at Cook County Jail are about to get really bitchy and add on about 10 pounds. Starting August 1st, the jail will go the way of so many restaurants in other cities and ban smoking entirely. Some people worry about the increase of violence, and I could agree with that. Every time I have tried to quit smoking I have turned into psycho apeshit bitch, and that was with the help of the patch.

The patch and gum will not be available to nicotine-withdrawl laden inmates, but they will have the option to seek counseling. Anyone who has ever tried to quit smoking cold turkey just burst into laughter. This idea might work better if they allow other forms of cessation-helpers, like the patch.

In future news, inmates profit from smuggling in cigarettes.

There is another jail (outide IL) that has adopted this policy…I’m too lazy to go look it up though. And sure enough, people get busted smuggling in tabacco. I see withdrawl riots in the near future.

I personally know an inmate of cook county jail and his stories are scary. The new smoking band has caused an increase in violence. Forget the anxiety that comes from quitting cold turkey, these people are pissed that another right is being refused to them. The smoking ban merely emphasizes how little control they now have over their lives. As a result, many act out. Do jail personnel have the balls to go through with this? In the past, this same type of ban was put in place and the inmates were able to overturn it. I guess we’ll see.

Oh, DuPage county jail does not allow smoking and I believe this has little impact on the “violence meter.” I truly believe the upset in Cook is about something being taken away from them. Dupage prisoners never had it to begin with.
