Kudos to Sen. John McCain and the Chicago Tribune


Kudos are due to the Editors of the Chicago Tribune for their principled stand in support of the McCain Amendment and against “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” of enemy prisoners and suspects. Kudos are also due to Sen. McCain for taking what is no doubt an unpopular stand within his own party.

You may recall that when Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) attached this amendment to a military spending bill, it passed the Senate by a vote of 90-9. Whom, you might ask, voted against the inclusion of this clause, essentially therefore voting in favor of torture? You guessed it- Republicans and ONLY Republicans.

Furthermore, President Bush has threatened to veto the spending bill if the McCain Amendment is included. In case you aren

    No need to defend your idealogy on this one. As a soldier of 10 years, I agree that we should not be torturing detainees. I would point out two things though:

    1) the entire Republican party didn’t vote against this. Only 9 of them.
    2) the bill was introduced by a Republican who was a former POW in Vietnam and someone who understands torture all too well.
