Ainadamar (“Fountain of Tears”) at Ravinia

I listened to a fascinating piece on NPR this morning about a brand new opera called Ainadamar (“Fountain of Tears”) which will be performed at Ravinia on June 14th.

The opera, by Osvaldo Golijov, “tells the story of the martyred Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, who was shot by Franco’s soldiers at the onset of the Spanish Civil War.”

What I found interesting were the interpolation of sounds not typically heard in opera- from flamenco and rumba flourishes to the use of gunshots, yes, gunshots, as a rhythmic element, something not typically heard outside the gangsta rap world.

For more info, tickets and a sound clip, visit the Ravinia site.

As an aside, I’m a bit disappointed with this year’s lineup of artists. I mean, c’mon The New Cars? The BoDeans? An ABBA tribute band? Steve fucking Miller? Boo.
