Marriage Licenses

Fuzzy with marriage license

If you want to get married in Illinois there’s none of this quickie Las Vegas style stuff — you have to plan at least a calendar day in advance. (But not too far in advance, the marriage license expires after 60 days if not used.) Both of you will need to show up at a County Clerk’s office with ID and $30 cash. The downtown office of the Cook County Building (118 N Clark) is open 9 am to noon on Saturdays just for marriage license applicants. And I have to say it was the most cheerful time I’ve ever spent in a government office.

Marriage? Seems like just a good simple agreement is all that is needed these days. Less costs, less paperwork, less legal stuff. Just make it a handshake deal. What’s really the point in getting officially married anymore?

Well, more power to all my brothers and sisters who have made decisions to be in committed relationships without involving the state and/or an organized religion.

But there do remain various legal protections that are only available to people who are legally married — making medical care decisions for the other person if they are incapaciated, for example.

And there’s also something to the notion of transforming the institution from within — of seizing onto the power of ‘tradition’ and wrestling with some of the more offensive aspects of marriage from within a marriage, perhaps in a way not possible from outside one.

And hey, it’s a great excuse for a party.

I’m with ya Fuzzy. I’ve seen an awful lot of marriages end in divorce for many types of reasons. Some of my friends are on their 3rd marriages! The Lawyer fees are outrageous. Of course nobody thinks it’s going to happen to them. Some of my friends that have been together for years, but are not legally married seem to be the happieast people I know.
