I have always loved the oddly robotic, and yet totally human voice that the CTA uses in their announcements. Something about it seems very level and calming. Even when I am “waiting for signals ahead”.

The Trib has an interview with the man behind the pipes this morning, and it is a funny read. I never thought of voice actors getting pigeonholed, but then I also never met the Moviefone guy.

i remember when it was actual people. i got so sad when they made the el and buses into HAL.

it used to be this urban point of pride that yeah, you know where to get off even though the stops were unintelligible. it was easy to spot the dipshit from woodfield or whatever; he would be the one with the crazy look on his face, like, “i didn’t understand! wait! i need prompt and efficient service! is this like parallel parking? help!”
