Oh, you Cubbies.
2 posts in one:
i) Hours after the Cubs wrapped up a 4-2 victory over the ‘Stros last night, Cubs’ 3rd base coach Chris Speier was arrested for a DUI while riding his hog around the North Side. Sigh. What a season it’s been. What else can go wrong? You can’t blame him for drowning his sorrows though. This season has S.U.C.K.E.D. But gittin’ on the bike after hittin’ the bottle? Not good. Of course it’s not like the Cubs will miss him if he’s suspended…they haven’t really needed a 3rd base coach this season anyway.
ii) Sports headline in the Onion a few weeks back: Disabled List Offers Mark Prior Two-Year, $8 Million Extension. Classic.
Your post rings very true. I doubt they much need a first base coach either, couldn’t they just yell instructions from the dugout during their card games?
For added irony, please note that:
“Speier, 56, was northbound on a motorcycle when a police officer saw him run a stop sign and pulled him over.
Speier was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to stop at a stop sign, Liakopoulos said.”
Is it not the one and only function of a third-base coach to know when to stop and when to wave ’em home?
Actually, his actions mirror perfectly the Cubs season thus far. Their lack of fundamentals gets them in trouble all the time.
Careful Steven, or you’re gonna steal my reputaton as resident sports curmudgeon ;).
Ha, there’s no fear of that happening.
When a team breaks down completely, the fans should rip ’em a new one.
Yeah, it’s just been that kind of season for the Cubs, hasn’t it? I really liked the Onion headline about Prior though. Ain’t that the truth?
The Onion article was great. But like you said Rising, it rings true. Since when did these athletes become so fragile? Prior was just on the DL for a strained oblique muscle, hurt while swinging a bat. Swinging a bat? I always thought these guys were the best of the best, in the best shape of their lives.
Fragile…yep. It seems soooo long ago that Wood and Prior took us to the NLCS, doesn’t it?
Too long ago. I actually feel sorry for Wood, esp since he might not have needed the surgery last year. All that rehab, and now his rotator cuff is torn. Sometimes, no matter how good a pitcher is, the body can only take so much.
