Winter Storm Canceled!

How often does this happen? Local news channels and weathermen go bonkers regarding upcoming storms that never materialize.

“The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation had deployed its entire fleet of 270 snow fighting trucks on the city’s main streets and Lake Shore Drive Sunday evening in preparation for the snow.”

Is the city being overly cautious? Do you prepare for winter storms or just do nothing?

Living as I do in the city, with a good supermarket two blocks away, I don’t worry much. Three or four of those 270 plows will be in the neighborhood as soon as a storm gets under way, especially with a mayoral election on the way.

I’ve long said that despite computer models and gobs of statistics (sorry, Tom Skilling!), it’s still possible to accurately forecast only about two days’ worth of weather. Beyond that, it’s fortune-telling.
