Comedy Open Mic at Pressure

Thursday night Erica and I went out to the comedy open mic at Pressure (6318 N Clark) to give Dan moral support as he added stand-up to his already diverse theatrical resume.

I’ve been to comedy open mics before, so I knew what expect. Delightfully, many of my expectations were proved incorrect — all in positive ways.

Pressure is a “billiards cafe”, not a bar, so there’s no liquor and no smoking. And the pool tables are in a completely separate room, so there’s no distractions from the comedy. And the stage is well lit and there’s plenty of comfortable seating.

The expectation where I was right-on was that the open mic featured a huge range of talent — from experienced performers trying out new material to brand new stand ups trying out being stand ups. The environment was very supportive of everyone. Even the crazy people. And, hey, it’s free.

Pressure claims on their site that they have sandwiches and so on, but the menu is very limited — a few fried foods, coffee drinks, and bubble teas. The chicken tenders and fries combo is, however, very good (for chicken tenders and fries, that is).
