Tunnels beneath the Green Mill

The Chicago Tribune and the owner of Shake, Rattle, and Read just did a guided tour of the spooky tunnels beneath his bookstore and the legendary Green Mill.I live for stuff like this, and thankfully there is some nice perky jazz music playing in the background of the entire video, so you don’t get too freaked out! It’s especially worth watching until the end because after the tour, there is an interactive Flash map of the basement. I only wish they made clear where the “tunnel I’m afraid to go down” is in relation to the map!(via Gapers Block)

Second Draft

Erica and I both loved Helvetica (the movie). The only reason I didn’t bother raving about it some more was that we saw it at the last showing in Chicago and I didn’t want to taunt anyone with a movie that they’d have to drive to Ohio or something to see. Well, it turns out it was enough of a hit that the Gene Siskel Film Center is bringing the movie back for a week-long run in September.

Got Extras?

If you have extra tickets for one of the Police shows at Wrigley Field, you might have a hard time unloading them. Seems Cubs’ season ticket holders bought up a whole bunch thinking they’d be able to sell them at a profit, and guess what, they can’t! Ticket brokers also got in on the action of buying up what they could, so now everyone has a problem.

Of course, if you are looking, you may be in luck!

Stand-up Competition at Taste of Chicago!

Warning, this is a completely shameless self-promotion.Hey Metrobloggers! Heading to Taste of Chicago this Saturday? Well, Metroblogging Chicago’s own Dan Telfer (aka me) is a finalist in Sierra Mist and KISS 103.5 FM’s Stand-up Comedy Challenge! If I could slip into the first person now, my stage will be near the corner of Columbus and Van Buren and the finals start at 4pm sharp. A few additional details are available here, though keep in mind I will not be performing until 4pm because I am already a finalist. The competition will be judged by a panel, and the winner will win a Chicago holiday package worth $200. I’ll also be entered as a finalist into a new competition the following weekend where I can win a chance to perform at Zanies, one of the more lucrative stages in town. Please stop by, I will be family friendly (for once) and promise to bring energy no matter how what temperature it is outside (wear light colors, people!).Image courtesy of K-Rock

So after quite a bit of hype, the iPhone comes out this Friday at 6 pm at Apple and AT&T Wireless Stores. Are you going to wait in line (or pay someone to do so)? If so, here’s our too-clever-by-half Google Map of the Chicagoland Apple and AT&T Stores:

Update: Police reform

About two weeks ago I posted this item on police reform being tabled. This afternoon someone commented something particularly relevant, and I thought it deserved its own post as my story was being buried:

Come, hear, and discuss the need for whistle-blowers in our police departments.¬†Join Kenneth P. Freeman, author of “Rose Tainted Justice: Privileges, Power, and Internal Affairs” on July 21, 2007 @ 12:00 noon at the African American Images Bookstore, 1909 West 95th Street, Chicago. We are demanding an end to corruption in our communities and in our country!Posted by: Kawana Coleman at June 27, 2007 02:11 PM

Thanks Kawana!

Sandra Cisneros Live at the Library

As part of the Chicago Public Library’s City of Big Readers program, author Sandra Cisneros will be speaking in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium at the Harold Washington Library (400 S. State) tonight at 6pm.In addition to talking about her work, she’ll discuss her connection to Chicago. There’s also a book signing.

Coinkydink?

This morning I passed a Cingular store on Chicago Avenue and two workmen were in the process of scraping the Cingular logos off the windows. This afternoon my cell phone’s Network readout changed from Cingular to AT&T. Nice that they could get those two events coordinated.

More Free Events!

Oh all the things we totally take for granted living in Chicago. I was invited to spend the evening at Welles Park this evening with pizza and classical music, but have dinner plans with my parents so I’ll have to pass this time.

Check out the schedule for Welles Park, and click around a bit for other Chicago Park District events. And best of all many or all are FREE!

I’ll be back for a couple of members from Smoking Popes, Josh & Eli Caterer on August 21, and the Hoyle Brothers the week after that. Hopefully I can make at least one other night before then.
