It is not a beach book

A heads up for those of us who have summer reading lists. Kevin Davis was on WBEZ talking about his recently published book, “Defending the Damned: Inside Chicago’s Cook County Public Defender’s Office” . This is not going to be light, summer reading. However this is a book that focuses on one of Chicago’s least understood civic treasures–the Public Defender’s Office.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I need to point that I had relatives in the Public Defender’s Office, hence my positive view of it. That being said, I know the people that Mr. Davis interviewed. Family relationships aside, I find them to be among the most brilliant, dedicated people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and working with.

Everyone is familiar with the court room drama–you can’t watch an Hour of TNT without seeing Law and Order. These shows glamorize the prosecutors. They are, more often than not, portrayed as heroes. Mr. Davis’ book will bring some balance back into that setting. I can say this simply by the virtue of knowing the people he interviewed.

Give the book a read. If you are at all interested in how the County operates or in the Courtroom, this is a good place as any to start.
