Attack of the Harmless Cicadas

I must admit that I was beginning to wonder whether all this talk about an invasion of 17-year cicadas in Chicago this summer was all just a bunch of baloney. Up until yesterday, I hadn’t seen or heard even one. But in Des Plaines yesterday, cicadas were all I saw. I could hear them as I drove down the street with my windows up and my air conditioner on full blast. They were everywhere, crashing into my car, trees and nearby buildings.

So if you’re looking for cicadas, go there. They’re pretty cool. Huge, loud, and a little freaky, but pretty cool.

But here in Chicago, I have yet to see them. What about you?

I’ve been bracing myself for the plague, but it’s been uneventful. But when I drive up north on I-94 I hear droning for miles. I also hear it near the forest preserve areas …

I saw a bunch of them in Skokie, and then heard them in Evanston. Maybe they realized that the suburbs are a nice place to settle down and raise a family.
