New Reader

New Reader

Some quick impressions of the newly redesigned, Creative Loafing-printed Reader:

It’s so light! The new Reader feels like it weighs about as much as a section and a half of the 3-section Reader of last week (it’s all one section now). At 10.5″ x 12″ it’s just a smidge smaller than NewCity (11.25″ x 12.5″) and much shorter than the old, unfolded Reader (11.25″ x 17″). The paper quality feels a little higher — smoother, shinier, and less likely to cover my hands with ink.

Miner, Joravsky, Isaacs, Straight Dope, Savage Love, Sharp Darts, a big theater review right with the theater section (that’s a nice change), listings, News of the Weird, it mostly all seems to be here. The only comics are Life in Hell and a shrunken Ernie Pook’s Comeek — seriously, Lynda Barry’s intricate lines need another half-inch to breathe.

At a quick glance, it’s not too shabby, though I’d like more, and larger, comics. I like the higher quality paper. And I’m impressed that they seem to have fit everything (or just everything I care about?) into a single section.

The Reader has a special page on their site set up just for comments about the redesign.

I saw this, picked it up, and then put it down, thinking that it wasn’t a full issue. Now I know.
