Illinois in Mississippi
For Christmas Erica and I went down to Vicksburg, Mississippi to visit her family. I was glad to be getting out of slashing-winds-off-the-lake Chicago for a week in the balmy south. Of course, a cold front blew across the south minutes (literally) after our plane landed so it was in the 30
And on top of this huge, fun to go into monument is a bright, shiny, gold “Mr. Eagle”!!!!
It’s nice that you noticed the monument to the Chicago Mercantile Battery at the Vicksburg park entrance. On the other side of the visitors’ center — next to the 2nd TX Lunette — are some markers to the battery as well as a monument to the company’s captain, Patrick White. Capt. White and five of his surviving artillerists received the Medal of Honor in 1895. I hope to launch my history of this well-respected battery — Chicago’s Battery Boys — in the next couple of months via Savas Beatie military publishers. Thanks.
