Illinois in Mississippi

And on top of this huge, fun to go into monument is a bright, shiny, gold “Mr. Eagle”!!!!

It’s nice that you noticed the monument to the Chicago Mercantile Battery at the Vicksburg park entrance. On the other side of the visitors’ center — next to the 2nd TX Lunette — are some markers to the battery as well as a monument to the company’s captain, Patrick White. Capt. White and five of his surviving artillerists received the Medal of Honor in 1895. I hope to launch my history of this well-respected battery — Chicago’s Battery Boys — in the next couple of months via Savas Beatie military publishers. Thanks.
