Put the cellphone DOWN!
Sorry Nikkos, it passed. As of July 8 it’ll be illegal to drive and talk on your cell phone (unless you’re using a headset or speakerphone) in the city of Chicago. Personally I am elated and hope the ban goes state-wise though I’d be even happier if all cell phone use was outlawed whilst driving. I’ll settle for this though.
The one thing that bothers me is how it just sort of passed with no warning. I mean when it looked like it was going to pass last month there was a big brouhaha and the vote was postponed. I figured there would be a little noise preceding the actual vote but no, it just pops up on the front page of today’s Trib as having passed. That seems a might weird if you ask me.
But like I said, I’ll take it. Maybe it’ll make my commute slightly safer. I sure hope so.
Well, what can I say? My opposition to this has been duly noted. It was pretty sneaky how they pushed it through. Oh well, that’s democracy- you win some, you lose some. Let’s hope it does actually make the roads safer.
I’ll concede it was pretty sneaky now that I’ve had a chance to read up on it. Though if it makes you feel better Burke wants to go after eating in the car too, so that would at least substantiate your earlier position that muching lunch and talking on the phone while driving are both pretty dangerous activites.
What I enjoyed most in the Trib article was reading that apparently there’s a bill being floated to ticket drivers for “performing personal grooming” while behind the wheel. While I imagine that, in some ways, trying to put on eyeliner while driving is punishment enough in itself, I would really prefer to never see another woman trying to do her makeup while the car she is piloting is in motion.
And then we can start on the people reading the paper behind the wheel… Yes, I mean you, Volvo on Skokie Blvd!
I drive quite a bit making sales calls, etc. and am involved with an idiot holding their cell phone up to their ear usually every day. I agree that the ordinance was pushed through in a sneaky way, and many people will continue to drive and talk, but it’s certainly got to help. The classic is the phone on shoulder and ear, backing up, while taking a sip of coffee. Good Grief!
This ordinance is fine, but god damn… Burke just never stops making things illegal. In exchange for passage of this, he should’ve been forced to give us back our spray paint.
anyone have a bluetooth headset they can recco?
I noticed Abt is having a sale but is backordered on some of their headsets (probably due to the law passing.)
