Hello Chicago Metblog
Hi, I’m Danny and this is my first post to the Chicago Metblog. I recently returned from Melbourne, Australia and so if there are any readers who come over from that Metblog city, hello, I really loved it over there (down there); it is cold and I miss my brief summer in Australia. But I am a Chicagoan and so I am used to this, of course, it only makes us stronger, right? Riiight…
So I woke up this morning and found a huge hole on the radio, Howard Stern is gone from WCKG (they’re playing reruns until someone named “Rover” takes over, and no, I won’t do that) and so I flipped around to see what could possibly replace that routine and, well, what I found was that radio really sucks. I knew that already but I searched anyway, passing quickly over the awful Mancow and stopping for a second on Johnny B. but that was lame, and then on to WXRT and no, not the Grateful Dead! How many times have I turned on XRT and found a good song, maybe classic R.E.M. or even Nirvana and then gotten into the shower only to hear them transition into a John Mayer song or the same Talking Heads song they’ve been playing since ’77? Every time!
I listen to WLUW (88.7) in the car but can’t get it at home so much, so now I’m looking at my options: NPR (never been a regular listener), satellite radio, or I can just do what I’m doing right now, which is playing Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” on my ITunes. Yes, we have a winner.

Aside from WBEZ and WLUW, Chicago Radio is dead to me. Actually, it’s worse than dead. Chicago’s Radio stations, remind me of zombies. Slow, conformist and brain eating. They’re slow to play new music, they overplay songs, most stations are conforming to the same format AND listening to these stations does brain damage….kinda like a zombie eating your brain.
Hey Danny, welcome aboard. Radio does suck. Sucks bad. Try Sirius. So many stations, for every different type of music. AND Court TV!

After reading your personal blog, I feel that I’ve gotten to know you a bit better and I just wanted to remind you to never go to Orange County, CA.
there are many reasons i love Chicago and the fact that it is not Orange County is one of them.
actually i was there a few years back, for a concert in Irvine, This Ain’t No Picnic with Sleater-Kinney, Sonic Youth and a bunch of others who probably wouldn’t be welcome otherwise. i’m guessing i really didn’t get a taste of the O.C. that day.
