I’m Spoiled
I’ll admit — I’ve been spoiled by living on the Northside, near the lake, and mostly traveling to and from high-traffic areas — I never have to call a cab. Any time of day or night, I stand out on the street and catch a cab in minutes. I’ve even made fun of my friends who live in cities where you can only get a cab by calling it ahead of time. But last night, standing for 25 minutes on the corner of Belmont and California (at 22° F, with a good cross-wind) made me realize that I should probably have a cab company number or two in my cell phone.
(I’m not endorsing any of these cab companies — they’re just the ones I saw on the sides of cabs today. Scientific, my friends, that’s my method.)
American-United Taxi – 773-248-7600
Checker Cab – 312-243-2537
Flash Cab – 773-561-4444 (order a cab online!)
Wolley Cab – 312-225-5411
Yellow Cab – 312-TAXICAB (312-829-4222) (Great number — website not Mac-friendly. Boo.)
Bonus link: Why does every city seem to have a Yellow Cab company?
I am a metroblogger author in the San Francisco area. Even though I am a Yellow Cab driver in San Jose, about 50 miles south of San Francisco, when in San Francisco I recommend Luxor Cab, (415) 282-4141. Stay safe; do keep a cab number with you and a bit of money for the fare.
Not only do we have a Yellow Cab but we have a Wolley Cab (what’s that spelled backwards kids!).
How Bizarro!!!
Wow — I had never noticed that about Wolley — I’d always assumed it was someone’s name. Neato.
I have to recommend that you stay AWAY from Flash Cab — they will leave you stranded. I gave them three changes over the course of a year to pick me up when I called them, and they’re just NOT coming.
If you live in a less densely cabbed area it’s also good to know what cab company has a depot near you. American has one in Logan Square so usally they come the fastest. So Fuzzy, next time at Belmot and California you know who to call!
Yellow and Wolley are the same company…found that out when using company comp tickets for cab rides
