How to Attend a Comedy Show

Carol Hartsell advises us on how to attend a comedy show. She’s writing about New York, but it’s good advice for us here in Chicago, too. Where she says Caroline’s substitute Zanie’s. And where she mentions alternative venues substitute Chicago Underground Comedy, The Elevated, and the Lincoln Lodge.

I only take issue with “7. For the love of God, laugh you douche bags” which could just as easily be replaced with “For the love of God, but funny you douche bag!” Sometimes we aren’t laughing because they jokes aren’t working.

Sure, there’s that. I’ve been to plenty of shows that just weren’t funny. But I’ve also been at shows with the people Carol is addressing with that admonition — people who came to a comedy show of, presumably, their own free will, but who then seem to regard laughing (or enjoying themselves at all) as some sort of defeat.
