I’m an Adult?

You know you’re getting old when you cannot hear the high frequency “mosquito” ring tone.  The article I read says that as we age, we lose the ability to hear certain frequencies. The graph below shows the frequency loss and the corresponding age.

But, because I still think that I am young I think “Pfft!  I’m sure I can still hear it. Bring it on, Man!”  So I play it and what do I hear?  NOTHING.  I’m certain that the volume on my laptop isn’t on so I check and it’s on.  I play it again and I hear NOTHING.  Okay, I hear a little something but really not enough to be classified as a sound.  CRAP! I’m old – I’m freaking OLD!

It’s not enough that I had to the responsible thing and leave my fun job for one that will provide my family with more financial security and progress my career along.  It’s not enough that I have to put other and their wants before mine.  It’s not enough that I have to check the box that says that I’m over the age of 30.  But, now after NOT hearing the mosquito noise I have to admit that I am an adult and that I have lost some of my hearing.

What’s next?  Is my hair going to fall out?  Thankfully I don’t have age spots on my hands or face and I don’t have crow’s feet.  But those days are coming – they are a hair’s breath away!  I have been told that I don’t look my age and I certainly don’t act it.  Okay, maybe in certain circumstances that’s not such a good thing.  I swear that this is enough to send me into a mid-life crisis if I hadn’t had my one alloted one earlier.  Or, maybe that was my quarter-life crisis which means that I am certainly entitled to a mid-life crisis.

Phew, I’m still young! Although, that as a ringtone would annoy the piss out of me. It’s almost painful!

Woohoo! I’m 34 and still heard it. I KNEW I was immature!

Where are you getting the ringtone from? I may be in denial, but I want to tripple check!

HAH! Turns out that I CAN hear it! I tried it at home and I could hear it – maybe I couldn’t hear it over the office sounds. What a relief!
