Favorite Summer Drinks?
You might not know it from looking out your window this morning, but today is in fact the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. We’re supposed to have a high of 90 degrees today, but with the clouds and 100% humidity it feels more like the Mekong Delta than Chicago.
This article in the NYT about the incredible array of summer drinks available from the cafes, bars, restaurants and street vendors of NYC got me thinking though- usually, there’s one drink that I crave all summer long- from the humble Corona to the more fanciful and elaborate- but this year, I don’t have a signature summer cocktail.
So, what’s your favorite summertime concoction? Do you make it at home or do you have to go to a specific bar, restaurant or neighborhood to get it? Share your fave recipe!
Margaritas, frozen, with salt and a slice of lime
A somewhat pedestrian but no doubt refreshing choice. Thanks Tim! Any particular favorite margarita and/or tequila?
We make em in bulk at home. Pretty much regular flavor, starting with Jose Cuervo mix. Jose 1800 is a good, run-of-the-mill tequilla or Petron if you really want to get crazy.
I vote for Patron or El Tesoro- I can’t stomach Cuervo, no matter what bottle they put it in. But I suppose for big batches a $50 bottle of Patron is pretty opulent.
I’m with the Margarita gang. Anyway you make them is fine with me, on the rocks, I do like the salt please.
It’s unanimous- maragaritas for everyone!
Yet more evidence of the insidious Mexican plot to reconquer America.
Make mine on the rocks, lotsa salt.
Nope, I’ll break that chain. Everyone only said margaritas because they forgot about MOJITOS!!!
Oh mojitos, I love you and your sugary, rummy goodness. Mmmmmminty.
Or if you’re the N’awlins/Galvestony type, go for a nice Mint Julep. After 2 you won’t even notice how hot it is.
Alana-
I’m with ya on Mojitos- they are awesome.
However….as a Kentuckian I must protest- mint juleps are a Kentucky thing!!! Texas can’t have them. (N.O. can have whatever it wants- they need them right about now.)
They may mix up a mean one in both LA and TX- and yes, a well-made julep will leave you as cross-eyed as a banjo-pickin’ Kentucky hillbilly- but they are as Kentucky as blue grass, beautiful horses and fast women.

(I like the part about Henry Clay introducing the julep to D.C.)
Boo to margaritas. Yay to mojitos! So tasty…
Miller High Life.
Come home from work, strip down to the wife beater, turn on the Sox, and sit on the back porch with a longneck. I’m classy like that.
(Wait, margaritas are “somewhat pedestrian”? I’m guessing you live in a pretty swank neighborhood, Nikkos.)
Sangria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sangria), always. My favorite is the red sangria at Cafe Iberico (http://www.cafeiberico.com/), though it’s pretty easy to make your own at home.
Swank? I don’t know about that. To say I have a healthy thirst that requires novelty to be slaked would be closer to the truth (and allows me to use words like “slaked”).
I find a good margarita, salt, on the rocks, completes the tableu of my little barrio in much the same way as your High Life is a perfect match for a back-porch Sox game session.
To each his own! To alcohol!
Who are you to deny me my Mint Julep! What, are you looking to go to fisticuffs???!!!
:)
I hope Map Room has Mojitos. Oh sweet bliss. See you later!
anyone know of a drink that includes the following> 6 frozen lemonade, 12 beers, 2/3 c. of bourbon ??? thanks for any help
I think you’re referring to a “shandy” although I haven’t seen it include bourbon, but I’m not gonna stop ya!
