3 Penny Cinema Closed

The 3 Penny Cinema has been shut down… apparently, they weren’t able to keep up with the Chicago “amusement tax”. You see, nothing in Chicago is tax free. Nothing.

I am really sad to see the 3 Penny go. Yes, it was a dump. But it was a charming dump, *our* dump. It was the kind of unique place that makes cities like Chicago great.

I’m disappointed too:( It was a fun dump to visit, damnit.

And not go all “fight the man!” or anything, but the death of independent theaters means the people who own Cineplex Odeon have come that much closer to getting to decide exactly which movies you see and which you don’t (and, as a result, exactly which movies get made…)

Oh wow, unpaid taxes, huh? I can’t believe the 3 Penny is gone! I am a Chicago native and have many fond memories of that place.

Chicago is a great city, but sure finds ways to over-tax business and homeowners alike. Have you seen some of the new property tax bills out this year? Some neighborhoods are up 20 – 30 % in one year! That is a crime.
