Dwell On This, Chicago
Photo from Gridskipper: No article on Chicago is complete without the obligatory hipster photo.
Via Gridskipper, I find that the architecture magazine Dwell has a new feature on our fair city in the form of an interview with local architect (Gridskipper refers to him as a “sensitive soul” but I can’t vouch for that) Brad Lynch.
Lynch’s faves include Club Lago (never thought of it as an architectural destination as much as a mob hangout, but OK), Don Juan’s (a Mexican restaurant I’ve never heard of- have you?), and the Music Box (no argument here).
Check it.
the article also featured Bari Foods on Grand, which is simply amazing. I wouldn’t go anywhere else to get Italian specialties. And their bakery has some wonderful cannoli …
I think Don Juan’s is up in Edison Park. I’ve not been there, have to check it out. But I find it hard to believe there isn’t better Mexican in Chicago than in Edison Park…
The photo above is from BAri, I believe. And Dave, I agree- I find it awfully hard to conjure that there are no better Mex restaurants in the city proper.
One of the main interviewees in the article, Amanda Burrell, works in the next office from me. She’s sweet as can be and a kick-ass media person for Metropolitan Planning Council.
And she won Time Out Chicago’s letter of the week last week. You rock, Mandy!
Mike, dude, go ahead and ask her out already!
Don Juan’s is up in Edison Park and it’s got great Mexican Food. I haven’t been there in years and I think it has changed a bit, but we used to go there every few weeks when I was growing up. And even after my parents moved away from Chicago, whenever they came back, we would try to meet there for a family dinner. I have always had amazing meals there. But don’t take my word for it…. for a while they were being reviewed regularly and always scored well with the reveiwers. So, sure, there are great Mexican places in this city, and I would rank Don Juan’s among them.
And the ceviche, well, it’s some of the best I have ever had.
The best Mexican in Chicago is in Uptown – Rique’s on the corner of Sheridan & Argyle. Reasonably priced and the best mole around, bar none.
Regina, I’ll inform Fuzzy of the ceviche! Thanks for your comments.
Casey, thanks for the tip on Rique’s!
