One Day in Chicago
One of our Portland Metblog compatriots is coming to Illinois for a wedding and has just a single day — Thursday the 5th — free from wedding duties to cavort in downtown Chicago. He’s asking what he should do. I’m giving my suggestions below, but I’ll ask you as well: if you only had a single day to experience Chicago, what’s not to miss?
- Do a 40-minute self-audio tour of Millennium Park.
- Pick a world-class museum: the Art Institute, the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, or the MCA.
- Have a Chicago-style hot dog from Hot Diggity Dog (251 E Ohio).
- Head over to Oak Street Beach and dip a toe in Lake Michigan.
- Head up to Wrigleyville and check out Chicago Comics* (3244 N Clark). Stop by Wrigley Field and reminince about its role in The Blues Brothers and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off**.
- If you really want to experience the Chicago-style gut bomb pizza, you could have dinner at Giordano’s (several locations), but I’d head over to the Crotch and have some Piece (1927 W North) pizza and microbrew and stare at the hipsters. Besides, that’d let you stop in at Myopic (1564 N Milwaukee) and Quimby’s (1854 W North), for more awesome book-reading action***.
* Well, it’s what I’d do if I only had a single day in Chicago.
** Yes, I’m a film geek, not a sports geek.
*** OK, I’m hopeless.
Thanks Fuzzy. Great suggestions. How bout a world class record store? Vinyl and vintage.
Done and done:
Dusty Groove (1120 N Ashland)
Reckless Records (Multiple locations, including downtown)
This guide is just in time for my sojourn from DC Metblog for ATP night at Pitchfork Fest this weekend.
Great suggestions. Will definitely hit some of your highlights.
Any Chi-town bloggers going to Friday’s SY/Slint/RZA show?
